This is a tour that’s almost two years in the making. The road to Hermit’s Rest has been closed and under construction. It is now officially open and limited to hikers and bicyclists. Our exclusive Ride the Rim Tour is designed for those looking for more adventure and a new way to see the Grand Canyon . It is NEW, it is FUN, and it is SAFE! It is also suitable for all ages! Your experience will be more than you can imagine. No crowds, no vehicles—just you (eight to a group), your bike, and your guide. You will not want to miss the opportunity to see the most colorful part of the canyon where you will have many true “Kodak moments.” This tour will change the way people see the Grand Canyon . It is also the most eco-friendly way to travel. So skip the shuttles and the walking: take advantage of our exclusive Ride the Rim Tour!
Travel to the Grand Canyon on one of our modern and comfortable touring coaches, which are fully equipped with restrooms, air conditioning, DVD players, flat screen TVs, overhead storage, and expansive tinted windows. Along the way, we will stop at Hoover Dam for a photo opportunity. Be sure to have your camera ready for pictures of the Dam, Lake Mead , and the Colorado River . There will also be a second rest stop in Kingman , Arizona.
From Kingman, you will travel to Williams, Arizona , home to the historical Grand Canyon Railway on Route 66. After a sit-down lunch (which is included), you will have time to look through the gift shop or browse the Railway museum or depot.
Once we reach Grand Canyon National Park , our guide will lead you to Mather Point to prepare for the bicycle tour. Bicycle rentals from Bright Angel Bicycles include several sizes of men’s and step-thru women’s models, three-wheel adult bikes, and pull-behind child trailers so younger children can come along. (Children must be 8 years old to travel with their own bike. Children younger will have to ride in
the burley honeybee trailer.) Just pick the bike that’s best for you! The tour takes place on historic Hermit Road . This road, which is over 100 years old, was recently rehabilitated to preserve its historic integrity and maximize safety and accessibility.
The bicycle tour is 5 miles long and is led by experienced guides who have been guiding visitors for 10 years, so you can be sure that you are receiving the best service possible. This is a leisure ride with 90% of the trail going downhill. If you can walk down to Mather Point, you can complete this ride. The tour begins at Hopi Point, one of the best views of the canyon’s inner gorge and a sacred place to ancient peoples of Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona . You will then continue to the Abyss, a brilliant demonstration of the Grand Canyon ’s geology.
From the Abyss, you will continue your ride to Pima Point. There will be a break here so you can enjoy the surrounding view, learn about the flora and fauna present in the canyon, and take photos. Afterward, you will complete the last section of the ride along the greenway, a new trail specifically for bicyclists and pedestrians. Along the way, you will have more opportunities to see these un-crowded viewpoints of the Grand Canyon.
The tour will finish at Hermit’s Rest, a National Historic Landmark that everyone should visit. This structure was built in 1914 by Mary Jane Colter. Built as a rest area for tourists on coaches on the way to Hermit Camp, Hermit’s Rest was designed to tie into the land and appear as a natural stone formation. This is a wonderful chance to see human history and nature combined.

SAFETY:
Your safety is our main concern. Be aware that you will share the road with motor vehicles. To properly control a bicycle, a rider must remember these riding practices:
- Helmets must be worn at all times while operating a bicycle.
- You are required to follow rules of the road, including traffic signs and signals.
- Use hand signals (to be demonstrated)
- Ride on the right side of the lane and NEVER ride against traffic
- When passing another bicyclist or pedestrians, make them aware of your location by calling out on your left
- In traffic, ride in a single file line
- Always yield to pedestrians
- Ride with both hands on the handle bars and only one rider per bicycle
- Be aware of your surroundings
We want to help the park service to preserve Grand Canyon National Park for future generations. The following is a list of practices to do so:
- Refer to provided maps in order to ride on approved paths and roads and find the locations of bathroom facilities, shuttle stops, and bicycle racks.
- Never feed or approach wildlife.
- Never abandon bicycles; lock bikes to appropriate racks.
- Firearms are not allowed in the park.
- Report all accidents resulting in personal injury, personal/government property damage, or injury to park wildlife/resources must be reported to park law enforcement ASAP. Emergency personnel can be reached at the following two number: 928-638-7805 or 911.
Please be aware of the following potential hazards:
- The Grand Canyon National Park is at an elevation of 2,133 miles above sea level. Take breaks from riding and STOP immediately if you feel dizzy or out of breath.
- The temperatures on the South Rim will escalate during summer months. Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke: heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, and nausea/vomiting.
- From mid July through September, visitors can expect daily afternoon rainstorms. You may be in danger of lightning strike if you are at a lookout point.
- During spring and thunderstorm season, winds can be strong. Pick biking tours that will give you coverage during these times.
- Choose biking routes that have minimal elevation gains and ride at a comfortable pace in order to avoid strain on the heart. Be aware of your personal limits.
- If you have asthma medications, bring them with you on biking excursions.
- Never ride a bike while pregnant.
- Take plenty of water on bike rides in order to avoid dehydration.
- Eating enough food to sustain the physical exertion is key to a successful ride.
- Wear appropriate clothing to protect from the sun and inclement weather, such as hats, long-sleeved shirts, sunscreen, and rain jackets.
Take the following precautions with your children riding in child trailers:
- Children should be wearing helmets at all times.
- Trailer safety belts should be adjusted and utilized by each child.
- Remember that the trailer is wider than the bicycle and requires a larger turning radius.
- Remember that the trailer will add weight to a bicycle and affect its braking ability.
